Safe Turkey Thawing: Plan Ahead for Success

When it comes to thawing a turkey, the recommended method is to do it in the refrigerator. This method helps maintain a safe and consistent temperature. According to the Casa Grande Fire Department, it is important to plan ahead for thawing.
The general guideline for thawing is to allow approximately 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds of turkey. Here is a breakdown of thawing times based on turkey size:
- 4 lbs: 1 day
- 8 lbs: 2 days
- 12 lbs: 3 days
- 16 lbs: 4 days
- 20 lbs: 5 days
- 24 lbs: 6 days
